Help MLLS support the Boys and Girls Club of Salem’s efforts to

budget shortfalls. Understanding the importance of the program, the Boys and
Girls Club of Salem stepped in. Boys and Girls Club now continues to run Teen
Court while providing opportunities for youth offenders to join positive
activities at the club. This annual attorney luncheon helps to provide a
consistent funding source for Teen Court and MLLS strongly encourages our
members to attend.

Although the luncheon is free, attendees are asked to make a
generous contribution to the Boys and Girls Club Teen Court program. Please join
MLLS in helping to make the luncheon a success by registering today!

Volunteer to be a Willamette Law student mentor!

9/12/2013

Willamette University College of Law is in great need of attorney mentors for this year's mentor program. Originally started by MLLS, Willamette's attorney-student mentoring program is now the largest in the state, pairing first-year students with approximately 150 lawyers and judges who will serve as mentors throughout the students' three years at the College of Law. This year, as many as 50 students are still waiting to be paired with mentors. The time commitment is only about one hour a month. The goal of the program is to help students transition into the legal profession. This could be by helping them understand the practice of law outside the classroom, learning the importance of developing
a professional community or just adjusting to law school.

We highly encourage anyone who can spare the minimal time committment to volunteer for this successful and important program. Volunteers can fill out the form at: http://www.willamette.edu/wucl/careers/mentor/mentor_form/ The Attorney-Student Mentor Program Kick-off Reception on Wednesday, September 18, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. If you can't make the reception, don't worry, you can still be a mentor!

If you have questions, please contact the Willamette Placement Office at law-career@willamette.edu or (503)
370-6057
.

2013 Imprint Program a Success

8/30/2013

- by Heather Vogelsong, 2013 Imprint Program Coordinator and MLLS member

27 North Salem High School students and 27 attorneys and law students participated in Marion County’s 2013 Imprint Program. The program paired a freshman from teacher Aireanne Nicholson’s class with a volunteer from the legal profession and provided them with the opportunity to form a one-on-one relationship through reading a book and
exchanging letters as pen-pals, providing the student an opportunity to interact with a positive adult role model.
This year, program participants read Sherman Alexie’s book “The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.”
The final event for the program was a pizza party, where the students and volunteers had an opportunity to meet each other face-to- face.

Each of the students who participated in the program was involved in AVID (Advanced Via Individual Determination) at North Salem High School.  AVID students have the intellectual capacity to attain college entrance, but tend to have barriers, such as economic or language barriers or the lack of a support system that may prevent them from going to college.  AVID helps students develop the critical thinking and organizational skills they'll need to attend college, acquaints them with the college environment and advanced courses, and assists them with college and scholarship applications.

The Imprint Program would not be possible without the support and financial assistance of the Marion County Bar Association, Willamette University, College of Law, and the Mary Leonard Law Society.  A big thank you is extended to each of those organizations. A special thank you is extended to Cathryn Bowie, who volunteered to take pictures of the volunteers and students at the pizza party.  And much appreciation is extended to the 27 volunteers who read books and wrote letters to the students.  The volunteers are the life of the program!  Thank you volunteers for your willingness to share a bit of yourselves with an aspiring student.

Fall Season Programming Will Open with a Discussion on Civil Rights

8/16/2013

Join us as the 2013-14 MLLS programming season opens with a fascinating presentation on civil rights history by Assistant US Attorney, Ron Silver. The Mary Leonard Law Society will present an access to justice CLE on the history of the Medgar Evers assassination and trials on Tuesday, September 24, at the Willmette University School of Law, room TBA, from 12:00-1:00 pm.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of civil rights activist Medgar Evers. Evers was
assassinated by a white supremacist in 1963. In two trials held during 1963,
juries composed solely of white men deadlocked on a conviction. In 1994, 30 years after the two previous trials had failed to reach a verdict, a third trial was held based on new evidence. Evers’ murder launched a series of criminal trials that later inspired civil rights protests, as well as numerous works of art, music, and film.

Assistant US Attorney Silver attended many of the 50th anniversary events to commemorate Medgar Evers assassination and celebrate Evers’ life and achievements. Mr. Silver will discuss the three trials that were held after Evers’ murder, and detail the eventual conviction of Evers’ assassin, Byron De La Beckwith.

The MLLS Lunchtime CLE is $15 for OWLS members; $20 for non-OWLS members; $10 for Judicial Clerks; and free to students, WUCL staff and professors, and to those not seeking CLE credit. Brownbag lunches welcome.
