April 8, 2020: The Emmett Till Case

Join OWLS Mary Leonard Chapter and the Willamette Women’s Law Caucus for a Civil Rights CLE with Ron Silver on the Emmett Till case.  This year marks the 65th anniversary of the Emmett Till case.  When Mamie Till Bradley decided to let the world see what the murderers in Mississippi had done to her son, Emmett, she set in motion a firestorm that continues to burn.  The lynching of Emmett Till is the story of a teenager tortured and murdered for being a teenager, a mother demanding justice, one white sheriff enforcing the law, while another white sheriff aids the killers, a courageous Black man confronting them, and the unforeseen impact on a department store seamstress hundreds of miles away that would irrevocably change America.

Ron Silver served as an Assistant US Attorney for 33 years, including seven years as Chief of the Civil Division.  Ron has lectured extensively on the history of the Civil Rights movement, bringing stories to life and connecting them to current issues.
